BioPoetics:
Existential Coaching
Mind and matter have been sundered, and we have split the spirit from the body, creating unlivable divisions between the visible and invisible dimensions of life.
Philosophy as an ancient way of life was rooted in spiritual practices, and integrated practical and intellectual skill—poetry and theory, art and science, music and martial training.
The modern world has turned philosophy into a mere academic discipline, something that seems impractical, unpoetic, unscientific, and reserved for a narrow elite.
BioPoetics shows individuals how to live philosophy as a way of life, tapping into its true origins and power.
Body
Samuel has over 25 years of training in martial arts practice, which he began studying as a boy in Korea with Grand Master Mun, who trained Chuck Norris, and Sensei Marcus DiValentino.
Samuel’s martial arts practice focuses on creating peace, diffusing conflict, and healing physical and psychic wounds. Physical fitness is essential for sound reasoning and self-mastery and a core part of the philsophical way of life. Physical training disciplines the will, sharpens focus, and fosters endurance to ensure the body supports the mind’s pursuit of truth and the spirit’s quest for meaning.
Sameul’s BioPoetics clients train in martial arts, yoga, and other bodyart practices.
Mind
Samuel earned his Ph.D. from Yale University in Philosophy of Religion. He is the Editor-in-chief of the Marginalia Review of Books and the the Director of the Institute for the Meanings of Science.
Formal study is fundamental to the philosophical life because it cultivates the intellectual rigor, critical thinking, and moral discernment essential for a good life. The philsophical life, like the scientific life, prizes inquiry and debate. Its purpose is to develop moral and ethical reasoning, independent thinking, and instill the the capacity to question deeply held beliefs.
Sameul’s BioPoetics clients have included entrepreneurs, scientists, poets, priests, scholars, artists, and writers.
Spirit
Samuel began his formal undergraduate education as a classical pianist before declaring the “even more practical” major of philosophy. Samuel’s most formative years in musical training were in Hawaii with Samuel Adams and in Virginia with Theresa Compos Falk.
Music and poety are inseparable from philosophy in cultivating a well-ordered soul and harmonious character. Learning how to play music helps us connect with our emotions and guides the mind toward wisdom and balance. Music in the philosophical life is both a practical and transcendent art—shaping who we are, how we feel, and how we connect with the deeper order of existence.
Samuel’s BioPoetics clients have learned piano, guitar, violin, and other instruments.
